Music from Land’s End is coming home

Jul 25, 2023

Get ready because this weekend, Bach is back.

The Music from Land’s End concert series will include two shows in Wareham this year, with the first, “Melodious Noise,” taking place at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 74 High Street, on Sunday, July 30 at 5 p.m.

Ariadne Daskalakis, director of Music from Land’s End, started this series in 2012.

After years of traveling around the world and performing as a violinist, Daskalakis said she “somewhat selfishly” wanted to bring more music to Wareham.

Daskalakis grew up as a summer resident in Wareham and her parents have since retired and moved permanently to town.

“I loved spending summers here and it's become like a family headquarters,” she said.

She added, “Even though I'm spending a lot of time outside of the U.S., it still feels like home here.”

Daskalakis said she loves “bringing together all these moving parts and sharing them with the community.”

Though continuity is somewhat maintained every year with returning performers, Daskalakis said she likes to include new twists.

She highlighted the addition of Singer Sherezade Panthaki to this year’s program.

“She is an amazing soprano — gorgeous voice,” Daskalakis said. “She sings all over the world with renowned conductors and renowned orchestras and it's a big treat to bring here to Wareham.”

She added all the artists in this year’s festival are “all really special.”

Saturday’s concert will feature works by Johann Christoph Bach (Johann Sebastian Bach’s uncle) and Johann Bernard Bach (Johann Sebastian’s cousin), George Frideric Handel, Sebastian Gottschick and Franz Tunder. The music will span from the Baroque era to modern times.

Gottschick’s piece “Melodious Noise” was written specifically for July’s concert. He will play his own music on the viola, joined by singers Panthaki and Jay Carter, flautist Emi Ferguson, violinists Daskalakis and Jesse Irons, cellist Beiliang Zhu and harpsichordist Arthur Haas.

If the first concert’s program didn’t have enough Johann for you, then just you wait: Music from Land’s End’s next concert, “So Many Ways to Sing,” will feature the works of Johannes Brahms.

Rounding out the concert, which will be at the Church of the Good Shepherd on Friday, August 11 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, August 13 at 5 p.m., will be music by Roglit Ishay, as well as popular songs from the 1960s to today.

Ishlay will perform his own music with Paige Riggs and singer-songwriter Nick Randolph with his ensemble “Nick and the M-L-E’s.”

The August 11 concert will be specially tailored toward families with young children.

Both concerts are pay-what-you-will.

This event was sponsored by the Wareham Cultural Council.
