National Night Out set for Tuesday night

Aug 4, 2014

National Night Out, an annual celebration of public safety and community cooperation, is set to take place at Lopes Field on Tuesday, Aug. 5.

The Wareham Police Department, Onset Fire Department and community police partnership volunteers will participate in the event, along with Target, a National Night Out sponsor.

The event provides the public with safety information, resources, and a fun, safe event for kids.

National Night Out, a non-profit organization, was founded in 1984 to "send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back," according to the organization's website.

The event kicks off at 5:45 p.m. with a first responder vehicle parade from the Onset Pier to Lopes Field. There will be exhibits with various firetrucks and EMS ambulances throughout the evening and at 7:45 p.m. there will be a K-9 unit demonstration.

For kids there is a moonwalk, waterslide, face-painting, and Wareham Police quad rides. Smokey the Bear will also be present.

National Night Out is a free community event.
