'Never Stop Learning' tackles the North Pole at the Wareham Free Library

Sep 12, 2012

Never Stop Learning, a history group that discusses various topics at the Wareham Free Library each month, will tackle the discovery of the North Pole on Tuesday, September 18, at 1:30 p.m.

Run by history buff Jerry Ciarcia, the group's goal is simple: to never stop learning.

"As we get older, it's good for the mind," Ciarcia said of learning new things. "It keeps the mind alive."

On September 18, the group will study the Northwest Passage, which paved the way for the North Pole exploration. Explorers Christopher Columbus, Henry Hudson, Capt. James Cook, Fridjos Nanson, and Ronald Amunson will all be discussed, as well as Robert Peary, who is credited with discovering the North Pole.

Peary "lost eight toes in that venture," Ciarcia said. "It's quite a story."

Next month's discussion will focus on the South Pole and the differences between the two poles.

All are welcome to attend the discussions. The Wareham Free Library is located at 59 Marion Road.
