New field and new season for the Wareham Gatemen

May 24, 2025

The Wareham Gatemen’s 2025 season is approaching and the team is heading into this year’s campaign with a new field and ready to compete.

“They’ll be playing on a competitive field that looks and feels like most every other field whether it’s high school, college or professional,” said Gatemen Board of Directors member Matt Merrick.

The field, located off Spillane Drive, has gone years without upgrades. To bring it to modern times, Merrick said the Gatemen had the infield and dugouts redone with more work on the way.

“We knocked down the dugouts and brought brand new ones in and installed a professional clay infield,” Merrick said. “We also redid the netting system to ensure our fans could enjoy watching games for a long time.”

Other work still to be completed includes installing a new windscreen on the outfield fence and putting a fresh coat of paint on the press box.

The Gatemen share the field with the Wareham High School baseball team and Merrick said the Vikings have given the Gatemen rave reviews thus far.

“I’m told the high school players are pumped,” he said.

The Gatemen are a member of the Cape Cod Baseball League, a summer league for the nation’s top college prospects to compete in front of Major League Baseball scouts. Their season kicks off June 14 at home against the Hyannis Harbor Hawks at 6 p.m.

“Every year we go in optimistic and then we see how the season shakes out,” he said. “We’ve got a great coaching staff, great organization and we’re bringing some great players in.”

The Gatemen are coming off a strong 2024 campaign where the club recorded 22 wins, 17 losses and a tie and went to the playoffs for the first time since 2019.

Several former Gatemen have transitioned to Major League Baseball well. Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran played for the Gatemen in 2017 and earned his first all star nod in 2024. Pittsburgh Pirates ace starting pitcher Paul Skenes, who played for the Gatemen in 2021, was named the 2024 National League rookie of the year.

On this year’s squad Merrick said Hunter Carnes, Easton Breygfoyle and Hayden Yost are the guys to watch for this year.
