New restaurant offers cheesy, hand-tossed Slice of Heaven
A new pizza shop is coming to town, and owner Todd Mello is confident he can win the hearts of Wareham pizza lovers, thanks to his business experience and pizza recipe.
Mello has a lot on his to-do list before A Slice of Heaven opens Sept. 10. He is bringing pizzas to the Bourne and Wareham police departments, handing out fliers and coupons and getting a shiny new sign for the restaurant.
Mello, who lives in Mashpee, has been in the pizza and sub restaurant business for 20 years and always wanted to open his own business. He is taking all he has learned from years of watching other business owners and applying that to his restaurant.
Though Mello is hiring three or four more employees, he said he will do a little bit of everything himself, from cooking the pizza to manning the counter.
His menu is extensive: hand-tossed pizza is the main event, but there are burgers, subs and seafood. Mello will use fresh ingredients and homemade meatballs and pasta sauce.
There will be specialty items: fried Twinkies, Oreos and pickles, stuffed peppers, buffalo macaroni and cheese and fresh spanakopita and baklava. Mello has specialty pizzas planned: taco pizza, shrimp scampi pizza and a Lucas Special pizza, named after his son, with triple the pepperoni.
“It’s a lot of stuff that other people don’t have around here,” Mello said.
Mello has five kids who are excited to help with the family-run restaurant. His daughter will be one of his employees. One of his dishes is even named after the family dog.
“My kids think I’m going to bring home pizza every night now,” he said.
A Slice of Heaven will open on the site of the former Olympic Pizza at 2605 Cranberry Highway, but Mello is confident he’ll stay open longer than his predecessor did.
“We have better quality and product by far, from what I’ve tasted around here,” Mello said. “Nobody here can touch the food quality-wise.”
Mello said his commitment to excellent customer service will also help his restaurant succeed.
“We’ll give them their food for free, we’ll make a new order and give them a credit for next time if they don’t have a perfect experience here,” Mello said. But he said "99.5 percent of the time" that won't happen.
The restaurant, which will deliver, will be open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to midnight.
“There’s really no aspect, when I open the door, that’s going to make me fail,” Mello said.
The lessons he's learned from two decades in the pizza business have allowed him to think about every aspect of opening a restaurant and “it’s just going to keep getting better.” He said the high-quality meats he’s using and his fresh ingredients will speak for themselves.
“I’ve built everybody else’s business, so it’s time to build mine," Mello said.
The restaurant seats around 36 people and will have pricing comparable to other pizza places in Wareham. Mello will be offering free slices at the store’s opening so people can sample his product.
