New Wareham Dances project to kick off with contra dance

Mar 14, 2016

Cultural Connection, Inc., will introduce the new Wareham Dances project with a contra dance on March 26.

A contra dance is a form of folk dance that is reminiscent of early 18th century English country dances, and became popular in the United States in the late 18th century. The dance is performed by couples in a line up and down a hall.

The dance will be held at the Wareham Boys & Girls Club at 13 Highland Ave. Doors are at 6:30 p.m., and dancing is from 7 p.m. – 10 p.m.

The cost is $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors.

Wareham Dances contra dance organizer, Lola Mello, of Wareham, has enlisted a number of contra dance community members, including artistic advisors Judith Schrier and Paul Wilde, who have been teaching and organizing dances for more than 60 years. Caller Rich Sbardella will conduct the dancing to the tunes of contra accompanists Anna Magee and Bob Elliott as lead musicians.

Wareham Dances was established to bring different styles of dance to the community. Over the next several months, the program will be introducing a number of additional dance groups of varying styles, including salsa, modern interpretive, funana, morna, tangom and more at various locations around Wareham.

Contra dances will be held at the Boys & Girls club every fourth Saturday of the month for the foreseeable future.
