New WCTV show brings weekly concerts to VFW

Nov 13, 2010

Last winter, Wareham Community Television producer Bruce Gannon created the station's first ever battle of the bands competition, Feel the Music, which aired live and allowed viewers to vote for their favorite performers. This season, he's dropping the competitive aspect, and taking the show on the road.

Gannon and his crew will broadcast Feel the Music Live from the Dudley L. Brown VFW Post in Onset every week until the end of March, breaking only for the week of Thanksgiving.

This time, there's no battling. Just music.

"I wanted to do something where I had a little more control over the entertainment," Gannon said, noting that he had to accept every band, regardless of experience level, into his battle of the bands competition. He coordinated an application and selection process for the new show, which will feature a different band every Wednesday from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. on WCTV's public station (Comcast channel 9, Verizon channel 30).

One thing that will be noticeably different for viewers this time around is the opportunity to stop by the VFW to take in every performance. There is no cost to attend.

After completing the battle of the bands show, Gannon realized, "the thing that was missing was an audience."

Hosting the show at the VFW alleviates that problem, and also brings in cash for the nonprofit through beverage sales at its bar.

"The Onset VFW has gone really overboard," Gannon said, thanking the organization, as well as WCTV, for making the show possible.

Feel the Music Live will feature acts from here in Wareham to Providence, R.I., some of which are "off the center line of normal," Gannon said. There's not one specific genre showcased, so viewers will get a different experience every week.

"You can't have a narrow mind for music" to enjoy the show, Gannon warned, but added that there would be no "yelling or obnoxious noise."

Gannon encourages all music-lovers to attend. "Come in, have some drinks, enjoy the music, and hang out."
