Next stop, Buzzards Bay: Wareham CapeFLYER platform behind schedule
The CapeFLYER won’t make its first ever stop in Wareham for Memorial Day weekend after all.
According to Tom Cahir, an administrator for the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority, the 400-foot-long train platform has yet to be completed to the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act and therefore will not be available for use this weekend as originally planned.
“My understanding is that it will eventually (stop in Wareham), but for some reason or another the state has said it’s not completed to comply with ADA standards,” Cahir said when reached by phone Tuesday morning. “Even though we intend to stop there as soon as we can, we’re unable to because the stop is not ADA compliant.”
Though the Wareham stop will not be opened as planned, the CapeFLYER will still be in service as of Friday. The train, which runs between South Station and Hyannis with stops in Braintree, Middleboro/Lakeville, and Buzzards Bay, operated last summer for the first time.
“The state tells us 'not yet,'” said Cahir. “They’re working hard at it. We just got word the other day. For some reason they can’t achieve that as quickly as they’d like.”
The Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority operates the CapeFLYER in conjunction with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority. Phone calls to the Department of Transit have yet to be returned.
Though Cahir said the Wareham stop would not be open at least for this weekend, he hoped it would be completed as soon as possible.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming the people of Wareham with open arms,” he said.
