Onset Bay Association thanks community for a great year
Volunteers are more than likely needed for the entire weekend of the Fourth of July fireworks, which were cancelled this year due to a lack of funds.
"I'm about 75 percent sure that we'll have fireworks," Onset Bay Association President Kat Jones told Selectmen on Tuesday night.
Jones met with the board to provide an update of her group's efforts, offer a "thank you" to the community for a successful year and request volunteers for the fireworks.
"As you may know, unless you've been living under a rock, we didn't have fireworks this past summer much to the dismay of the entire community," said Jones.
Since then, a new committee filled with a "passionate, active" group of people have put on fundraisers and held auctions to raise the $40,000 needed each year for the show.
The association is currently at $29,000.
With a recent commitment from John Decas to donate $5,000 for the next five years to the fireworks, Jones explained the association hopes to keep the fireworks going for the foreseeable future.
"We hope to create a sustaining fund for the fireworks so we don't have to start new every year," she said.
While the monetary part of the show has been the primary focus for the group, helping hands are needed to keep it running smoothly.
Jones invited the community to stop in during the association's meeting, held the second Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. and the third Friday of every month at 9 a.m. All meetings are held at the Onset Bay Association's office located on 4 Union Ave.
