Onset Blues Fest brings VFW pavilion to its feet

Aug 7, 2022

Despite the heat and winds that blew away two vendor tents, the 30ish Annual Blues Fest kept smiles on faces and brought people up to dance.

Nicole Nelson of Dwight & Nicole shared advice from her grandfather that she said she thinks of on hot days — just keep moving.

“Doesn’t matter how fast or slow,” she said, adding that it felt like a sauna. “Move how it feels right.”

And the bands gave the crowd plenty of motivation to get up on their feet.

Dwight & Nicole rounded out the afternoon, performing after Gracie Curran and the High Falutin’ Band, the Gil David Correia Band and Rebooted.

In addition to the blues, there were plenty of refreshments — slow-cooked barbecue, ice cream, and plenty of cold drinks of all kinds. And a number of vendors were on hand, selling everything from hats to CBD cream to card readings.

“Talent has been fabulous all day,” said Kat Jones, director of the Onset Bay Association, which organized the event. She also praised her volunteers: “the best in the business.”

Charlotte Carlson said she’s been a vendor of CDs and homemade jewelry at the festival for more than a decade.

“We just love the blues music,” she said.

Gina Luna offered various card readings.

“Everybody’s happy,” she said. “It’s such a fun place to be.”

The Onset Bay Association’s next big event will be the Chalkfest, held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 20 at the Onset Pier and Bayview Park.

Summer of Love weekly free concerts will continue from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. each Wednesday at the Lillian Gregerman Bandshell in the heart of Onset. The Jody Moore Duo Trio will perform Aug. 10, followed by the Party of 2 Acoustic Duo on Aug. 17, Neal McCarthy Music on Aug. 24, and Grace Morrison on Aug. 31.
