Onset fence project spruces neighborhood, teaches skills

A group of adults with disabilities have spent July developing their independence, one cracked and peeling fence post at time.

Starting four weeks ago, 10 adults took two hours each Monday, Wednesday and Friday to repaint the fence along South Boulevard, overlooking the Onset bluffs. Judy Alves of the Taunton-based Road to Responsibility said the project is twofold: community service and job development.

Alves noted that residents noticed the hard work of the painters, offering gratitude and in at least one case, fresh watermelon.

“The thanks they’re getting makes them feel capable of doing anything they want,” said Alves.

Road to Responsibility is a community-based day center for adults with disabilities. It teaches them skills to help them enter the workforce, explained Alves.

The nonprofit seeks projects where its clients can hone job skills and serve communities. Alves said the Onset job was the first time the organization had done work in Wareham.

On Aug. 2, the group added the finishing touches to the fence, which had been completely repainted.

“It’s been fun,” said Jess Dias, one of the painters. “It gives us something to do and work on our job skills.”

Tom Borland, another painter, agreed.

“This is better than being inside and the view is great,” said Borland.

Alves said following the completion of the Onset fence, Road to Responsibility will seek out similar projects in Wareham.
