Onset Fire goes pink

Oct 21, 2010

In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Onset firefighters are wearing pink on every Tuesday in October. But going pink doesn't just show support, it's raising money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.

After receiving a flyer in the mail advertising the shirts, "I said, 'Oh my God, this is such a good idea,'" explained Onset firefighter Brittany Andersen, who coordinated the station's effort.

The firefighters purchase the tee, and then pay $5 for every Tuesday that they wear it. The money will be collected and donated to the foundation.

Onset Fire Department also raised about $525 for the foundation through an October 19 spaghetti dinner at the station, and Andersen says they'll likely continue wearing the pink shirts - and raising money - on Tuesdays until the end of the year.

The store that the department purchased the shirts from, thefirestore.com, has all sorts of things to help firefighters increase breast cancer awareness. Even pink helmets. But Andersen doesn't think the firefighters will be jumping to get those anytime soon.

"It's hard enough to get some of these guys in pink," she said.
