Onset firefighters honored for participating in 9/11 ceremony
Two months ago Wareham recognized the victims of 9/11 on the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks. On Thursday, Nov. 17, members of the Onset Fire Department were honored for participating in the event.
Winna Dean - co-chair of the 9/11 remembrance ceremony and member of the Onset Fire District's Prudential Committee - recognized the participants, as did her colleagues.
Onset First Assistant Engineer William Ellis; Senior Captain Raymond Goodwin; Captain Call Firefighters John Cook and Peter DiPasqua; and Call Firefighters William Cook, Edward Doucette, Derek Fortes, Rachel Gillette, Paul Ingeno, Michael Lyons and Henry Noe all received certificates recognizing their work.
Wareham recognized the tenth anniversary of 9/11 with a parade of first-responders, veterans, Massachusetts Maritime Academy cadets and community organizers, followed by ceremonies at the pier and the Onset Band Shell. Veterans and first-responders were honored at the ceremony, as well as Onset summer resident Linda Gay, whose husband died on American Airlines Flight 11.
"That ceremony was really touching," Prudential Committee member Marcine Fernandes said of the firefighters' work. "The community really appreciated it."
But the firefighters would not let all the glory be bestowed on them. Senior Captain Raymond Goodwin recognized the organizational skills that made the event possible for them to participate in the first place.
