Onset fireworks fundraiser hits halfway goal for fireworks

Oct 7, 2016

The Onset Bay Association raised $13,132.50 and counting during its fundraiser Thursday night. With $7,500 already saved up, the fundraiser placed the association at its halfway mark for the $40,000 price tag of the Fourth of July fireworks.

There was little room to move in MezzaLuna during the annual fundraiser hosted by the association.

Deb Alfonso, a member of the association, said: "This is the biggest turnout we've ever had."

Even the association's President Kat Jones said she was amazed by the volume, which she guessed was at least a couple of hundred people.

All those people were there for one purpose: to help the association put on a fireworks show next Fourth of July.

Each year, the association must raise approximately $40,000 to put on the show. Usually, generous donations help push the show through. However, there was no fireworks show this year due to a lack of funds, donations, and volunteers.

Residents were upset following the holiday, and just as passionate as Jones and other association members about bringing the fireworks back.

The fundraiser featured a silent and live auction hosted by committee members Jamie Souza and Bob Hayes. Hayes, who is new to town, recently became a member of the association and is an auctioneer by trade.

Auction items varied greatly and all were donated by local residents and businesses.
