Onset man arrested following car chase
A two-town high-speed chase reaching reported speeds of 130 miles per hour ended with the Saturday, July 29, arrest of a 35-year-old Onset man.
No one was injured, and Peter Rezendes IV was reportedly taken into custody without incident.
Wareham Police report that the incident began at about 2 a.m. Saturday when a Wareham officer stopped a white Chevrolet Camaro on Main Street only to have the car speed away as the officer approached.
The ensuing chase led onto westbound Interstate 195, hitting estimated speeds of 130 miles per hour. Police said that, due to concerns for safety, the chase was terminated.
However, the report continued:
A Rochester officer later spotted the car on Route 105 in Marion as it began to head eastbound on Interstate 195 toward Wareham.
Wareham officers successfully deployed “Stop Sticks,” devices designed to deflate tires, as the Camaro entered town. Despite several deflated tires, the car continued northbound on Interstate 495, losing one of its tires and rims before coming to a stop and ending the pursuit.
Upon examining the car, officers reported discovering a large amount of U.S. currency and a quantity of what is suspected to be Fentanyl.
Rezendes was charged with failure to stop for police, operating a vehicle after suspension, which he has been convicted of prior, a plate violation, a marked lanes violation, operating to endanger and possession with intent to distribute a Class A substance (Fentanyl), which he was also convicted of prior.
Rezendes will be arraigned at Wareham District Court Monday, July 31. According to police, he has a lengthy criminal history which includes numerous narcotics-related convictions.
