Onset resident wins chili contest with 'chili shots'

Feb 8, 2012

An Onset resident serving up "chili shots" took home the top honors during the second annual Chili Contest to benefit the Onset Summer of Love Music Series on February 4.

Paul Goodell won best overall in the contest, serving up "shots" of chili -- small cups topped with a bite-sized piece of cornbread.

The event raised more than $1,000 for the concert series, which costs approximately $8,000 to put on each year.

"It takes a lot of energy to put this together," said grateful organizer Kat Jones as dozens filed into the Dudley L. Brown VFW to sample the various conconctions. "We can't do it without our community."

Contest organizer Mikala McCane called the pre-Superbowl event a "raving success." The contest featured nine chili dishes.

The hottest award went to Rick Converse of Shooters Restaurant and Rick's Towing, while Marion resident Diane Lopes Flaherty took home the award for best presentation.

The Onset Summer of Love Music Series will feature 11 weeks of family-friendly summer concerts held at the Band Shell in Onset. The season kicks off on Wednesday, June 20, and ends on August 29.
