Onset VFW looking to get liquor license back

Feb 27, 2013

After having its liquor license revoked by the state, the Dudley L. Brown VFW Post in Onset is taking steps to have it reinstated.

Officers from the VFW appeared before Selectmen on Tuesday, Feb. 26, to request that the board approve a change of management and new officers and directors for the VFW.

The board approved the changes, allowing VFW officers to move forward with the request for license reinstatement at the state level.

"This is part of it," said VFW Treasurer Julio Roderick. "It was just a temporary suspension until we could get this done."

The state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission revoked the VFW's liquor license in December after finding that the group had violated liquor laws by serving liquor at an outdoor pavilion without the special license needed to do so. In addition, the ABCC found that the VFW did not inform the state about a change in management or get approval from the commission on officers and directors.

"One of the steps to healing that was to get a change of management," said Selectmen Chair Steve Holmes.  "The state will ultimately decide" whether or not to reinstate the license.
