Onset's Shell Pointe Real Estate celebrates merger with Jack Conway Realtor

Sep 27, 2013

Built in 1942, the building that houses Shell Pointe Real Estate in Onset was once the go-to place for fish.

"You used to wait in line for your fish and chips," said Onset native Winna Dean, gesturing to the old sign on the wall at the real estate office that reads, "Roy Besse & Son Fish Market -- Fried Seafood to Take Out."

"The line was out the door," Dean recalled with a smile.

The fish market closed in the 1980s, but in the '90s, Sandra Besse -- with decades of experience in real estate -- breathed life into the building by opening Shell Pointe Realty, appropriately named for the coastal landmark not far from the office.

Besse, an Onset native, built her successful company by making buyers and sellers feel comfortable and at home in the small office overlooking Onset Bay.

She then passed the torch to her daughter, Lauren Cardin.

Now, the building will house a branch of Jack Conway Realtor -- in a move that has two daughters continuing their parents' legacies.

Just three months ago, Cardin met Carol Conway Bulman -- daughter of Jack Conway, who built the largest real estate company in New England in Jack Conway Realtor.

Their pasts were all too similar.

Both credit their own success in the real estate business to their parents.

"I have the great honor of continuing a legacy that was started in 1956," says Bulman, who serves as president and CEO of the real estate company her father created. Jack Conway passed away after a brief battle with cancer in 2012.

Cardin says earnestly: "My mother is the only reason I'm here in life and in business."

So, it just seemed right that the two daughters would team and continue building on the legacies their parents began.

Shell Pointe Real Estate has become Conway on the Bay. And it will continue to have that small town feel for which it is known.

"It will have that local feeling and flavor," says Ralph Grassia, regional vice president for Jack Conway. "It's going to be a better service for the community."

Conway on the Bay will specialize in real estate in waterfront neighborhoods such as Onset and those in nearby Bourne and other local waterfront communities.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday was filled with smiles and (happy!) tears from the family members, real estate agents, and community members, many of whom -- like Dean -- remember when that little building housed that fish market.

"It was a marriage made in heaven," said Grassia -- also an Onset native.

Bulman echoed that sentiment, saying: "I could not be more honored to be working with Lauren Cardin and Shell Pointe."

Cardin, who will manage the Conway office, thanked her mother profusely for her role in her success.

Her mother, however, was near speechless with happiness for her daughter.

"These are happy tears!" Besse told the crowd before cutting the ribbon that signified another new chapter.
