Operator of Chatham Village Croutons receives desired state tax credits

Dec 31, 2012

The T. Marzetti Company has received $625,000 in tax credits through a state program, which will allow it to expand the Chatham Village Croutons factory in West Wareham.

The state Economic Assistance Coordinating Council approved the T. Marzetti Company for participation in the Economic Development Incentive Program, which is aimed at reducing the cost of doing business and encouraging economic growth.

T. Marzetti's products include croutons, salad dressings, dips, and frozen breads. The company plans to invest approximately $2.5 million in building improvements at its existing 15 Kendrick Road facility and at a new facility at 20 Kendrick Road. The company also plans to invest approximately $6.5 million in new equipment for the facilities.

In the fall, Town Meeting voters approved an agreement between the T. Marzetti Company and the Town of Wareham that will give the company a reduction in local taxes for 20 years.

T. Marzetti requested and received a tax abatement from the town on half of the projected increase in assessed value on the properties — approximately $2,500 — for 20 years, at a total value of $60,155.

The local approval paved the way for the company to receive assistance through the state program.

T. Marzetti representatives said at the time that state and local tax incentives were a big factor for the company in deciding whether to expand in Wareham, or at a similar facility currently operating in the Midwest.

The project will allow the company to add 25 new jobs in Wareham, and retain 140 jobs. T. Marzetti plans to close a facility in New Bedford when the expansion is complete.
