Photos: Horseplay on Merchants Way

Sometimes, when the weather’s nice, you just want to take your pony out for a walk and some ice cream.

That’s just what Scott Lorraine and his wife Melody did on Saturday, May 27.

Their pony Tonto, who recently celebrated his ninth birthday, joined Scott and Melody for a relaxing afternoon on Merchants Way.

The three Lorraines took in the scenery of the Wareham River, proving that you can indeed lead a horse to water. Scott and Melody chatted with drivers who hit the brakes in shock from seeing the pony (Tonto himself was quiet). They also stopped at Gone Country Creamery on Main Street, trying the blueberry cheesecake flavor. The ice cream was supposed to be for the humans only, but Tonto’s appetite forced Scott to pony up the sweet treat.

“I didn’t think he’d like it,” Scott said, “but he did enjoy it.”

“Usually he prefers carrots,” Melody said.

The Lorraines have two ponies and two miniature horses at their Wareham home. Scott and Melody like exposing their animals to the outside world as much as possible. Sometimes, the horses pull Scott around in a cart. In return, Scott drives them up to Maine and throughout Plymouth County in a black school bus.
