Plympton woman charged with OUI after New Year's Eve crash
Wareham Police have charged a 22-year-old Plympton woman with operating under the influence of liquor after the car she was in crashed into Onset's Broad Cove at approximately 10:40 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.
In addition to OUI, Meghan Gagnon has been charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle following the crash, which injured Gagnon and a male passenger who police have not identified.
According to Wareham Police, Gagnon and the passenger were found standing on shore when first responders arrived. The car was found partially submerged 50 to 75 feet off shore.
Police said both were taken to Tobey Hospital for evaluation after being exposed to the cold weather and water.
Wareham Police reported that a 10-pack of vodka nips with four bottles missing was recovered near where Gagnon and the passenger were standing when officials arrived.
During the investigation, police said both appeared intoxicated and denied driving the car. Police said they determined Gagnon was the driver and was heading to a friend’s house when she lost control of the car, entering the water from a public access area near Locust Street and Upland Road.
Onset Fire Chief Ray Goodwin said the man and Gagnon were wading in the water when firefighters arrived
Emergency responders were initially concerned that there may be a child or children in the car, and asked that police go to a home in Plymouth to see whether children were there. It was later confirmed that the children were not traveling with the adults.
In addition to Wareham EMS, Onset Fire, the Wareham Harbormaster Department, and Wareham Police responded to the scene.
Gagnon will receive a summons to appear at Wareham District Court regarding the criminal charges.
