Police Department hosts another successful toy drive

Wareham's emergency personnel are doing their best to make sure kids in Wareham have a merry holiday.

The Wareham Police Department held its annual “Stuff-a-Cruiser” holiday toy drive Saturday, with help from members of the Harbormaster Department.

“So far, so good,” said Lieutenant John Walcek from in front of the Wareham Crossing Target Saturday afternoon, where he and others gathered to collect toys from holiday shoppers.

Walcek said they’d collected hundreds of items, including two bicycles, at Target, and another cruiser at the East Wareham Walmart had been stuffed with donations as well.

He said the donations would be given to the 22nd Annual Dick Melloni Youth Foundation Toy Drive. The foundation is a Wareham-based non-profit that focuses on children’s health, education, safety, and well-being.

“All the toys will go to families in Wareham,” said Walcek, who also thanked the Harbormaster Department for their help transporting the toys that had been collected.

Kristi Melloni of the Foundation said the police-organized toy drive was like having their own "Santa's Workshop."

"They are able to reach so many people who are willing to help," she said. "We are very grateful to have them involved. By receiving these donations, we are able to pack for more families and give each child a Christmas. As we start packing our supplies start to dwindle. This event gets us more toys so we never run out."

"It's amazing to have the help of the Wareham Police Department and Harbormaster," added Melloni.
