Police respond to rash of vehicle break-ins

Jun 23, 2011

Wareham Police detectives and patrol officers are investigating a series of early morning break-ins of more than a dozen motor vehicles in residential areas of Sandwich Road and the northern section of Route 28.

Police began receiving reports from the victims Wednesday morning and Thursday morning, June 22 and 23, between midnight and 8:00 a.m.

All of the vehicles that were targeted were unlocked with valuables left in plain sight, according to police. Stolen items include several GPS units, an iPod, a briefcase, and loose change.

“Thieves will walk through neighborhoods at night or busy mall parking lots and look into car windows for valuables. If they see anything, even loose change, they will lift the door handle to see if it is unlocked and be in and out in seconds," warned Wareham Police Public Information Officer Bill Fihlman.

Wareham Police say residents should take preventative measures to avoid break-ins, including: Always locking vehicles, never leaving valuables in plain sight, and leaving an outside light on at night.

Additionally, if you are out for a day of shopping, put your purchases in the trunk. Place large items that will not fit in the trunk into the back seat and cover them with a blanket or similar item, police said.

Police further warn residents never to leave vehicles unattended with the motor running. "It is an invitation to have your car stolen and it is a violation of Massachusetts General Laws," according to police.
