Polly wanna computer?
For the unfamiliar person meandering down Onset Avenue in Onset Village, the sight may provoke a double-take. In one storefront window, perched on a what could be described as a bird playground - without a cage - are a Moluccan cockatoo and Senegal parrot.
But the birds aren't for sale.
"No, this is not a pet store," said Larry Senna, owner of LS Computers, which offers computer repair services. "[They're] just my pets."
LS Computers has been located in Onset for 17 years, though it recently moved to its 211 Onset Ave. location. The cockatoo, named Dewars, has been a fixture in the store since he moved in seven years ago.
"I've had him since he was two weeks old, and I hand-fed him with a syringe," Senna said.
Dewars has never known a home outside of the store.
"It's amazing how many people come in and visit him," Senna said. "He's the biggest attraction in Onset, almost."
Cleopatra, the parrot, moved in three months ago. She belongs to Mark Salerno, co-owner of Marc Anthony's Pizzeria which is located down the street.
Senna said that in the summer, 20 to 30 people per day stop in to say hello or to ask why there's a large bird in the window of the computer store. Children like to let Dewars perch on their arms.
"The recurring summer people, first thing they do is come here [and] ask, 'Where's the bird?,'" Senna said.
Dewars doesn't mind all the attention. He'll respond by saying, "Hello, baby" or by bobbing his head in delight.
"He's a people-bird," Senna said. "Once I got him, everyone fell in love with him."
Listen to Dewars say, "Hello, baby."
