Postcard collection chronicles history of Wareham, Onset
Memories of growing up in 1930s Onset came flooding back to Connie Garbutt as she looked at old postcards collected by George Decas.
“My family used to rent out the second floor of this building in the summer,” said Garbutt, pointing to previous hotel located near the stone bridge on Onset Avenue. “It was owned by Capt. Washburn, and he would take us out in the canal on his catboat.”
Garbutt, who is a lifelong resident of Onset, joined others on Monday night where the Wareham Historical Society had the Decas postcard collection on display.
A past president of the Wareham Historical Society, Decas collected the postcards to preserve the town’s history. The collection was on loan from Katharina Decas.
The postcards were tucked in plastic sleeves inside of binders. Historical Society members provided magnifying glasses for anyone who wanted to read what was written on the postcards.
Also on display were portraits of members of Wareham’s Besse family.
Historical Society President Angela Dunham said the portraits were donated when the family decided to sell its historic home on Main Street.
“They are in remarkable condition,” said Dunham, adding she’s in the process of identifying who is depicted in the individual portraits.
The Wareham Historical Society’s next event is set for Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. when residents will be invited to share memories of growing up in the town’s different neighborhoods. The event will be held at the Old Methodist Meeting House on 495 Main St.
