The Wareham Historical Society will hold a public program about the Captain John Kendrick Maritime Museum, including a report on the building’s rehabilitation.

The program will take place on Monday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Methodist Meeting House, 495 Main Street.

Historical Society President Angela Dunham will present on Captain John Kendrick’s legacy and his significance in local, national and international history.

Captain John Kendrick is perhaps best known for his visit to Japan in 1791. He is believed to be the first American to visit the country, which had a strict isolationist policy at the time that prohibited contact with foreigners.

The Historical Society will also present a report on the six-year journey for the rehabilitation of the Captain John Kendrick Maritime Museum, the historical home of Captain Kendrick and a 1745 Wareham landmark, and the village responsible for its success.
