Raise a glass: Liquor store gets OK to move to Tobey Road
RoseBrook Wine & Spirits has officially been granted permission to transfer its liquor license and move to a new location after Selectmen addressed the issue for the fourth time on Tuesday.
The issue had been controversial during the last three Selectmen meetings as board members debated the merits of allowing the store to open near two existing liquor stores.
The debate started when the owner of RoseBrook Wine & Spirits requested a move to 16-19 Tobey Road, constructing a 7,000 square-foot building there and changing the store’s name to Liquor ‘N More.
Selectmen voted 3-2 to grant permission. Selectmen Alan Slavin, Judith Whiteside and Anthony Scarsciotti (who made the tie-breaking vote) voted “yes.” Selectmen Chair Peter Teitelbaum and Patrick Tropeano voted “no.”
In a previous Selectmen meeting, Teitelbaum and Tropeano raised concerns about the new location because there are already several liquor stores in the area.
“I don’t think this was cut and dry for any of us,” Teitelbaum said. “I don’t think there’s any clear, 100 percent right answer.”
Teitelbaum thanked representatives Robert and Daniel Chamberlain for their forbearance over the last four Selectmen meetings.
This is the second time in three years the license is moving to a different location. The A.D. Makepeace Co. previously held the license. When they opened the mixed-use development RoseBrook Place on Cranberry Highway, the liquor license was transferred and the store opened as RoseBrook Wine & Spirits with a new owner.
