The A.D. Makepeace Co.’s “herculean effort” to transform land near the intersection of I-195 and Route 28 from open space into an economic engine paid off again Thursday afternoon.

Business and town leaders, as well as the public, officially welcomed the spot's newest addition – the All-American Assisted Living facility – with a ribbon cutting.

After the ceremony, Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce President Marie Oliva lauded the cranberry growing company for its foresight in attracting a myriad of businesses to Rosebrook Way.

“I would say this has been a herculean effort on behalf of the A.D. Makepeace Company,” said Oliva. “There are doctor's offices, banks, a hotel, restaurants, medical facilities and now this building, which will serve our senior population.”

After years of planning, Oliva noted that the area has recently seen explosive growth.

Joining her to celebrate was Rick Kidder, CEO of the South Coast Chamber of Commerce (formerly the New Bedford Chamber of Commerce.) The two chambers recently announced a joint effort to work together on behalf of businesses in the region. Thursday marked the first time both chambers attended an official ribbon cutting, cementing that partnership.

“Collaboration is better than competition,” said Kidder.

From a local perspective, Wareham Selectman Alan Slavin cheered the opening of the facility, which has space for 112 residents. As of Thursday, 30 people have taken up residence at the facility, according to All-American Assisted Living's Community Relations Director Virginia Lehr.

Slavin said the business provides a local option for older residents who need assistance. He noted that 40 percent of Wareham’s population are seniors.

“People get to a certain point in life where they need help and they end up moving out of town,” said Slavin. “They have to leave behind friends and family. With this particular development they can stay in town.”

Slavin added that the new business also benefits the town’s bottom line.

“And, this increases our tax base,” said Slavin.
