Relay for Life raises thousands for cancer research
Over 100 people walked laps to honor those who have battled cancer and raised thousands for cancer research.
Relay for Life took place Saturday, Sept. 13 on the track near the middle school. The nine hour walking event has been held in Wareham several times over the years and returned after a four year hiatus last year.
Event organizer Tricia Hackett-Turner said they are hoping to raise around $20,000 and had already cracked $14,000 four hours into the day.
She added that at the four hour mark, over 100 people had already stopped by the event and she was expecting another 50 or 60 to arrive.
The track was lined with white “luminaria bags” decorated in honor or memory of anyone who has battled cancer.
Cancer survivors at the event were honored with the survivor’s lap, a walk down one of the track’s straightaways solely for survivors.
