Residents finish Boston Marathon

Apr 18, 2011

Wareham runners hit the pavement in the 26-mile Boston Marathon on Monday. The route begins in Hopkinton and ends in Copley Square in Boston.

Rosemarie Wiley Lyons, 45, ran her third Boston Marathon, having qualified to run this year during last year's race. Her time was 3:48:43.

"It was a good run," Lyons said, adding that she ran in support of Donate Life New England and in memory of her parents and friends who have passed away.

There were "a lot of angels helping me get there," she said.

Lyons' time qualifies her to run next year's race. She said she's not quite sure whether she'll take on the marathon for a fourth time. "Right now I'm hurting, but maybe!"

Wareham residents Howard Staples and Donna Simmons participated as part of the Perkins School for the Blind team and raised money for the Boston-based school. (For more information, see related links below!) Staples finished with a time of 4:58:18, while Simmons' official time was 6:11:36.

It was Simmons' first time completing a marathon. "I'm a little sore, but I feel awesome," Simmons, 43, said the day after the big race. "There were a couple of points when I wanted to stop, but I'm so glad I finished." She said she hopes to participate again next year.

It was Staples' second year running the marathon. The 59-year-old is a lifelong runner, but was temporarily slowed down in 2009 when doctors determined he needed a pacemaker implant to fix a problem that caused his heart to stop for seconds at a time.

Staples was thrilled to learn that he finished this year's marathon 12 minutes faster than last year's.

"The weather was perfect," Staples said, noting that there was a tailwind that helped runners along for some of the race. His wife, Ardi, and a team of other "cheerleaders" helped him through the race. "We had fun raising the money" for Perkins, he said.
