Restaurant has a new owner for the new year

Dec 31, 2012

The restaurant formerly known as Pomodores, then as Grille 28, has a new owner who is seeking a liquor license from the town, and is planning to open under the name Barnacle Bob’s.

The property, located at 2424 Cranberry Highway, was foreclosed upon on Nov. 2, 2012, and purchased from the Hingham Institute for Savings by Timothy Ciaffoni of Wareham, according to a clerk in the Board of Assessor’s Office.

Ciaffoni is scheduled to appear before the Board of Selectmen for a public hearing on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 7:15p.m.

Wareham Week contacted Ciaffoni at his Wareham office and he would his only say that he is not at liberty to comment at this time.

Ciaffoni appeared before the board of selectmen at the Dec., 11 2012 meeting to apply for a liquor license, but was advised that the license of the previous owner had not expired, nor had it been surrendered.

Ciaffoni was advised by the board that they could not issue two licenses for one location simultaneously. “If the other license were surrendered tomorrow, you wouldn’t have the two license issue,” said Town Counsel Richard Bowen at the Dec. 11 meeting.

Ciaffoni was advised to speak with Interim Town Administrator Derek Sullivan regarding the process he needs to follow in order to open in a timely manner.

“I want to make sure he leaves here knowing where to go and what to do,” said selectmen Chair Steve Holmes at the Dec. 11 meeting.

Pomodores operated at the location for six years under the ownership of Brian Welch. Faced with competition from restaurants at nearby Wareham Crossing, Welch revamped the menu, renovated the interior, and opened as Grille 28 on January 12, 2012.

Grille 28 was shuttered in April due to what Welch said at the time was a liquor license issue.  When Grille 28 opened it was still operating with Pomodores liquor license while awaiting a license transfer.

Welch also owned Barnacle Bill’s at 3126 Cranberry Highway in East Wareham, and there is a sign out front indicating there’s a new owner. Wareham Week could not confirm the name of the new owner.

According to the Town Clerk’s office said no business license has been filed for the location 3126 Cranberry Highway location, and according to the Assessor’s office said the property itself has not changed hands since 2006.
