One wine glass at a time, the Onset Bay Association poured more money into this year’s July 4 fireworks fund as 61 people arrived at Mezza Luna Restaurant to eat, drink and be creative for “Paint Night.”

Led by Wareham resident and art teacher Jennifer O’Connor, the group painted, decorated and otherwise customized wine glasses in a variety of ways at a cost of $40 per person on April 13.

O’Connor brought with her supplies, helpful tips for decorating glasses and a secret weapon for the creatively challenged.

“If you’re feeling overwhelmed and don’t know what to paint, I brought stencils,” said O’Connor as cheers followed.

The event drew a mix of locals, out of towners, including at least two groups of people from Dartmouth, and a “surprising number of men,” according to Onset Bay Association President Kat Jones.

Jones said the fundraiser helped nudge the group closer to its $40,000 goal. Currently, donations are up to $36,000 for the fireworks, which were canceled last year due to a lack of money.

Jones said the association is fairly certain this year’s fireworks will go on as planned.

“The deposit has been paid and we have signed a contract with the fireworks company,” said Jones.

Come July, it’s likely more than a few people will enjoy the show with a customized glass of wine in hand.
