Robert Scott, 89

Jun 27, 2025

WAREHAM - Robert Scott, a devoted husband, father, and creative artist passed away at age 89 in Wareham, Massachusetts on June 2, 2025. Robert was the middle of three children born to Hilda and Dr. Daniel Scott on June 27, 1935 in Freeport, Texas. He is survived by son Timothy Scott residing in Los Angeles CA, son Christopher Scott in Deadwood SD, sister Margaret Kellums in Fort Collins CO, a grandchild in San Francisco CA, a half-brother in Houston TX, and many nephews and nieces. His brother Daniel Scott III is deceased.

Robert had an eventful childhood, moving from Freeport to Houston and then to Austin when his parents divorced. In Austin he attended middle and high schools, including junior and senior years at the then newly established St. Stephen’s Episcopal boarding school (where he was a member of the football team for two undefeated seasons). He went on to attend the University of the South in Sewanee Tennessee and the Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri where he focused on the visual arts. Before completing studies in Kansas City, Robert moved to Boston to study at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts while living with his elder brother who was enrolled in Graduate school at MIT. Robert spent an additional year enrolled at Tufts University where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts.

Robert married the love of his life, Dale Gifford in June of 1960 on the day of his graduation, and began his career in commercial arts in Boston. Not long thereafter they had son Timothy and several years later had son Christopher. To accommodate the larger family, they soon moved to Walpole MA and then in 1972 they adventured out to build a unique house in the seaside town of Wareham MA where Robert and Dale reared their children and were devoted contributors to the arts and conservation. While devastated with the recent passing of his dear wife in July of 2024, it was important to Robert that he spend the remainder of his life in the beloved home of their making.

Throughout his 89 years, Robert admired beauty, majesty, and mystery in the universe around and inside him. He was inspired by not only the colors, shadows, and plays of light upon the many scenes of the world, but also by the abstract creations from an inner realm that required no physical counterparts to be expressed. He sought the laughter of friends, many a fine bowl of ice cream, and a toast of good cheer. He was forever reaching out to touch us with creative inspirations from his fertile and unfettered imagination, and leaves us with fond memories of his spontaneous, and often humorous, musings and renderings of the world as seen through his unique and exemplary vision.

A church memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, July 12, 2025 at the Church of the Good Shepard, 74 High St., Wareham followed by a celebration of life gathering for Robert and Dale at Warren’s Harborview, 59 Main Street, Wareham MA.

Donations on their behalf and in remembrance of Robert Scott can be made to the Wareham Land Trust, P.O. Box 718, Wareham, MA 02571, Nature Conservancy, Church of the Good Shepard, P.O. Box 719, Wareham, MA 02571, or an organization in support of the creative arts.
