Rockland Trust acquires Mayflower Bank in merger

May 20, 2013

There may soon be one less bank name in town as Rockland Trust has acquired Plymouth based Mayflower Bank.

Both banks currently have branch operations in town. A Rockland spokesman said earlier this week that it is too early to know how the bank combination will affect individual Mayflower branches and their employees.

Mayflower Bank, which has two locations in Wareham, was acquired for $37 million. Rockland Trust currently has one location in Wareham.

Founded in 1889, Mayflower Bank has eight locations in Plymouth County. It holds $236 million in deposits, and about $141 million in loans.

Senior Vice President of Rockland Trust Ralph Valente said that because the acquisition happened so recently, it's difficult to say how it will affect the employees at the Wareham locations. He noted that job losses are possible, but Rockland Trust will do its best to minimize any fallout.

"We just announced this last week. What we typically do is we work with the customer base," to determine what the specific needs of the community are. "There may be some consolidation, it's really too early to tell."

Valente says that should any Wareham branches close, the employees will have a safety net.

"Any open positions at Rockland Trust, the Mayflower employees will be given preference [for]," said Valente.  "Our goal is that every single Mayflower employee will have a role at Rockland Trust, or they'll land successfully somewhere else."

Valente says that there are some benefits coming to both commercial and individual customers because Rockland is a larger bank with more resources, and more advanced technology.

Valente said that business development offers and cash management options will be added services for businesses. He also said that Rockland ATMs are also designed to cater to the needs of business owners, in that a business owner may deposit a "stack of checks" at a time.

On the personal banking side, he said that remote depositing will make banking easier for individual customers.  Customer may also set up alerts on their smart phones to let them know when they have a low balance.

"You can take a picture of your check with your smart phone and deposit it on the go," said Valente.

While it's too early to tell exactly how the acquisition will impact Wareham, and local Mayflower Bank employees, Valente says that Rockland is able to offer customers more options by virtue of their sheer size.

"They're a great bank they just don't have the scale that we do."
