Republican presidential hopeful and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney was the top vote-getter in Wareham and the state in Tuesday's primary election.

Only 13%, or 1,918 of Wareham's 14,690 registered voters cast ballots in the primary, the latest turn in a hard-fought, months-long race for the Republican nomination.

Rick Santorum was the runner-up in Wareham with 182 votes, while Ron Paul was third with 137 votes.

Who will ultimately win the Republican nomination is unclear as of just before 11 p.m. on Tuesday, as results across the country are still being counted.

Also on the Republican ballot was an uncontested race for State Committeeman. William L. Nickerson received 871 votes. There were 514 blanks and 14 write-ins.

Of the 517 Democratic ballots cast, 421 voters gave a nod to President Barack Obama.

The Democratic ballot featured uncontested races for State Committeeman and State Committeewoman. Marc Pacheco and Mary Wasylyk garnered 455 and 433 votes, respectively.

There were also 24 candidates on the ballot who will work with the Democratic Town Committee.
