Construction on Route 6 bridge begins
After weather-related delays last month, construction has begun on the bridge connecting Wareham and Marion on Route 6.
The $51 million Massachusetts Department of Transportation project has been in the works for years, and after multiple delays the aging structure spanning the Wewantic River is now being replaced.
According to the project summary, the existing bridge was built nearly 100 years ago and is “structurally deficient, functionally obsolete, and critical.”
One lane in each direction has been kept open, while the other two have been closed for construction.
The completed project will still have two lanes on each side, with shoulders added for safety and a 10-foot wide shared use path on each side.
Crews are working 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily, with construction estimated to be completed by the end of the year.
During construction, MassDOT is storing equipment and materials at nearby Town Hall. The department is paying Wareham $1,000 each month for the first year, with a $250 increase each additional year it is needed.
