Rubber ducks race downstream for the Wareham Library

Jun 15, 2015

You could say everything went swimmingly Sunday afternoon at the inaugural Rubber Duck Race put on by the Friends of the Wareham Library at Tihonet Village.

Hundreds of individually decorated rubber ducks streamed downhill through a pipe and into the canal next to Tihonet Pond, flying fast at first then slowly floating toward the finish line.

The event, a fundraiser for the Friends of the Wareham Library, has been in the works for months. The Friends have been selling the ducks at library used book sales and other places and events throughout town.

Dozens of spectators cheered on their ducks from the banks of the canal as Blake Pinto's rubber duck was able to stick out his bill and win the race.

After it was certain no fowl play was involved, it was determined that the top five ducks belonged to Pinto, Eric and Stephanie Dunham, Lydia Buckminster, Jen Crossman and Melissa Dyer.

"I guess because I'm on my school swim team it gave it good luck." said Buckminster, whose duck finished third in the final pecking order.

As the ducks passed the finish line there were people with fishing nets and even someone in a kayak to corral the ducks so that they could be retrieved by their owners.

All kinds of duck themed jewelry and accessories were available at the event. Additionally, the sports quilt made up of a dozen Boston sports tshirts sewn together and donated by Christine Heywozy, was raffled off and won by 4-year-old Collum Bird.

Given the success of the inaugural event, it seems likely more people will get a chance to take a quack at winning the Rubber Duck Race next year.
