Sanders, Trump take first place in Wareham

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and millionaire real estate developer Donald Trump took Wareham in Tuesday’s primary election.
In contests that saw 39 percent of Wareham’s 14,709 registered voters go to the polls, Sanders topped former Senator, Secretary of State and First Lady Hillary Clinton 1,653 to 1,524, and Trump garnered 1, 468 votes to 1,006 for all his opponents combined.
Among registered voters in town, 3,819 are registered as Democrats, 1,726 as Republicans, and 9,002 are unenrolled. In a primary race, the unenrolled may choose to vote in either partisan contest.
With hotly contested races in both parties, 3,251 Wareham residents chose to vote in the Democratic contest and 2,474 in the Republican.
Taking second place in the Republican contest in Wareham was Forida Sen. Marco Rubio with 327 votes, followed by Ohio Governor John Kasich with 274, Texas Senator Ted Cruz with 223 and Dr. Ben Carson with 89.
In both contests, candidates whose names were on the ballot but have dropped out of the race received a few votes.
Two voters chose the Green-Rainbow Party ballot, splitting their votes between Jill Stein and William Kreml.
Tuesday’s voter turnout topped that seen in the 2012 presidential primary, when just 13 percent of Wareham voters cast ballots in contests that were ultimately won by Barack Obama and Mitt Romney.
