SATURDAY: Cape Verdean Festival in Onset
The annual Cape Verdean Festival will be held in Prospect Park and the Onset Band Shell from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on August 10.
The free event, which traditionally attracts thousands of people, will open with music at 11 a.m. from Milton and the Friends from New Bedford, and end with Zé Rui de Pina. Also performing is the Victorious Dance Group from Brockton.
Kathy "Lady K" Canute from Onset will serve as this year's entertainment and stage director.
In addition to the musical performances, nearly 100 vendors selling arts, crafts, clothing, and jewelry will fill the park. Vendors open at 10 a.m.
Food is always a big part of the festival. This year, 24 vendors will offer all the favorite Cape Verdean fare, along with barbecue, fried food, seafood, and desserts. A covered eating area will be set up with tables and chairs.
Raffle tickets will be sold with cash prizes of $1,000, $500, and $250.
Attendees can pick up a free program with information about the performers, the Cabo Verde islands, Cape Verdean recipes, and the history of Cape Verde.
There are three designated parking areas along Onset Avenue. Parking costs $10 and a free-of-charge shuttle will transport attendees to and from the festival between the hours of 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
The rain date for the festival is Sunday, August 11.
