Schools' art show a hit at Wareham Crossing
Up-and-coming artists from Wareham Public Schools got the opportunity to show off their works to Wareham Crossing shoppers during a four-day art show.
The show, which featured work from students in kindergarten through grade 12, was located in the former Friendly's location from Thursday, October 24, through Sunday, October 27.
The opening reception brought in close to 300 people, noted 5th-grade art teacher Cynthia Gedraitis, who called the turnout "awesome."
Visitors trickled in throughout the weekend to see the work -- from drawings to pottery and everything in between.
Juliet Waratuke, a 7-year-old second-grader at John W. Decas Elementary, pointed out her shiny paper lizard on Saturday.
"I cut out tin foil and then I cut out paper and then I glued it on," Juliet explained, noting that it was "kind of hard to cut out the paws."
Wareham High alum Alyssa Capozzi saw the Bourne-Wareham Art Association's exhibit at Wareham Crossing last summer and shared the idea with high school art teacher Amy Dion, who approached the rest of the district's art teachers in September about organizing the show. All were on board.
"It's rare to have a [grades] K-12 art show," noted Gedraitis, who manned the show on Saturday. The district's art teachers took turns staffing the exhibit. "What a great outlet for students."
