Selectmen reflect on the day JFK died

Nov 20, 2013

On November 22, 2013 it will have been 50 years since President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, and on Tuesday night members of the Board of Selectmen took a minute to remember where they were when it happened.

Selectman Judy Whiteside says she was at school.

"We were about to play a field hockey game against our biggest rival," she said. After they heard the news about the president each team voted to still play.

"I don't remember who won that game," Whiteside said.

Others had memories of a black and white television bringing the devastating news, and watching the impact on the adults around them.

"All I remember, obviously the black and white TV, and my parents crying," said selectman Steve Holmes.

Selectman Chair Peter Teitelbaum says he heard about the news much the same way.

"I saw it come on TV and my grandmother was watching it at the time," he said. "She was a pretty tough old bird, but even she started to tear up a bit."

Selectman Patrick Tropeano said he was waiting for his mother in the car outside of a supermarket when he heard the news on the radio.

"It came on the radio, just then all the radios cancelled out and said the president had been shot," he said. "I told my mother and she started to sob."

No matter where they were, it was clear that it was something that left an impression on everybody who remembers it.
