The Board of Selectmen expressed concerns about the many inactive marijuana business licenses in town at their Jan. 12 meeting.

The board voted to open host community negotiations with Trava, Inc., a proposed marijuana grower and manufacturer hoping to open in Jordan Plaza at 3119 Cranberry Highway.

Selectman Alan Slavin said that he spent some time looking into the company, and had concerns. He noted that the company was formerly run in part by a man who was involved with the bribery scandal involving the Fall River mayor. Slavin said that he had been told that person was no longer involved, but that he wouldn’t be comfortable approving the agreement until he saw a full list of investors. The board voted to open negotiations.

Members also discussed the status of the many other businesses licensed to grow, manufacture, or sell marijuana in Wareham.Trade Roots, a growing and manufacturing company, is set to begin operation in the spring, Selectman Peter Teitelbaum said.

Selectman Patrick Tropeano said he was concerned that the two retail-licensed marijuana businesses have not yet begun operations. Only Verilife is currently selling marijuana. Officials said that they would look into the possibility of reallocating the licenses of businesses that remained inactive.

Slavin also noted that the Cannabis Control Commission has voted to allow manufacturers to sell and deliver marijuana directly to customers.
