Selectmen explore upgrades to get more meetings on TV
Wareham officials are looking to expand the reach of municipal meetings by upgrading the audio/visual equipment used by the town and hooking up video equipment in two more municipal meeting rooms.
Currently, the only room equipped with permanent filming equipment is room 320 at the Multi-Service Center, where the Board of Selectmen meet every Tuesday, according to Wareham's Director of Informational Technology Matthew Underhill.
On Tuesday, the Board of Selectmen and Underhill discussed their options.
"We can request WCTV to see if they'd like to fund it for us," said Underhill. "If the studio can't find it in their budget, we can try hitting up the cable company in the next negotiations."
Wareham Community Television established separate contracts with Comcast and Verizon in 2005 and 2007, respectively. WCTV has a contract with the town under which, both cable companies pay 4% of gross revenues from cable services in the Town of Wareham to WCTV, and 0.5% to the town.
At a February Board of Selectmen's meeting, WCTV agreed, as part of the contract, to cover all Board of Selectmen, School Committee, and Town Meetings. Coverage of other municipal meetings must be requested 10 business days in advance.
The contracts will expire in 2015 for Comcast, and 2017 for Verizon.
Selectmen and Underhill discussed possibly outfitting the Town Hall auditorium, and another room at the Multi-Service Center with updated audio/visual equipment.
"By adding these other rooms to the system more government" meetings can be aired on TV, Underhill said.
