‘A sign of our patriotism’: Elks lodge will celebrate the American flag on June 6

The Wareham-New Bedford Elks lodge will host its annual Flag Day ceremony on Saturday, June 6 at 11 a.m. at 2855 Cranberry Highway, celebrating the history of the American flag.
During the ceremony, the Wareham Fire Department will hoist a garrison flag, an extra-large U.S. flag, from its tower truck.
Elks lodge trustee Jim Callan said that the event will also have two guest speakers. Commander Colleen McRae, an associate professor at Massachusetts Maritime Academy, and state Rep. Steven Xiarhos (R-Barnstable), a Gold Star father whose son was killed in Afghanistan, will speak at the Flag Day ceremony.
Callan said that McRae and Xairhos will speak about what the American flag means to them.
“It’s a get together of the community and it’s also a sign of our patriotism,” Callan said.
