Singer-songwriter savors Wareham history in first full album
A local singer-songwriter is releasing her first studio album this summer, full of catchy choruses, history and storytelling she hopes will strike a chord with her audience.
Grace Morrison’s first full CD is titled “I’m the Apple” and will be released at the end of summer.
Morrison said she chose this title because an apple symbolizes many things historically. She has a song on the album with the same name, which she said is a breakup song where she describes herself as an apple who will fall on the ex-boyfriend’s head.
The album, which Morrison said is not quite country and not quite folk, has two themes: personal things she has experienced and historical stories. Morrison said she loves history, particularly the history of Wareham, where she has lived all her life. One song, “Oh Alma,” describes a great aunt who lived in a house in Wareham.
“I wanted to tell a little bit of the story of that house, because I think a lot of people wonder about it,” Morrison said.
Other historical stories are told through lyrics about the Titanic, her grandfather who was in World War II and a grandfather who is a Vietnam veteran.
Morrison started taking piano lessons at age 4 because she was shy and it was one of the only activities she was interested in. Since then, she has added guitar to her repertoire, experimented with clarinet, trumpet and viola and recently began playing the accordion.
“The accordion is my spirit instrument,” Morrison said. She likes seeing people’s reactions to the instrument and the “amusement factor” it provides.
Though Morrison’s band released an album in 2012 and she has released a CD of a live performance, this will be her first fully-produced studio album.
The album has some of her old songs on it and some that audiences have never heard before. Morrison said releasing this album will fulfill a dream she has had since age 12.
“I have always wanted a tactile thing of my music,” Morrison said. The album has given her a clear vision of her style and what her songs are about.
Work on the album began last summer and the project has cost Morrison over $10,000 so far. She plans to go on tour in October and will play locally in Wareham through the summer.
The album is being produced by Jon Evans of Brick Hill Studio in Orleans. Evans has performed with many of Morrison's music inspirations, including Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan and Ben Folds.
Morrison teaches music in the Wareham community, offering lessons in piano, voice, guitar, songwriting and recently accordion.
The album release isn't the only exciting thing in Morrison's life this summer. Her wedding this week is to a man she describes as the most considerate man she knows and an amazing father.
"I never thought I would get married ever in my life," Morrison said. She met her soon-to-be husband because she taught piano lessons to his daughter. They were best friends for a long time and are now planning a cranberry bog wedding with hot dogs and an inflatable bounce house.
The Wareham community has always been supportive of Morrison’s work, she said. They allow her to perform at various venues around town. Now, she is excited for her album to show a side of her audiences do not get to see live.
Two years ago, Morrison released an EP titled “Redemption: Winter,” paid for through donations of Wareham resident’s bottles and cans. She raised $1,500 from redeeming the recyclables. She said this continues to remind her of the community’s support and excitement for her musical endeavors.
After "I'm the Apple" is released, it will be available on iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby and wherever Morrison is performing. For more information, visit www.gracemorrison.com.
