Six honored for volunteer work -- and not saying 'no'

Jan 18, 2012

It was plaque time at Tuesday’s Selectmen’s meeting as six women were presented with proclamations and plaques recognizing their volunteer work for senior citizens, the Police Department, and the town’s business community.

Inez Berry  and Yvonne Stone were commended for their work with the Friends of the Elderly – as was Marge Gardner, who was not able to attend the presentation.

“My brothers always said I didn’t know how to say N-O,” a smiling Berry joked with selectmen as she made her way back to her seat.

Midge Costa and Janet Jones were commended for their volunteer work in the Police Department. They came to the department as part of the “senior tax work-off program,” which allows seniors to “pay” property taxes with volunteer hours. They’ve stayed for countless additional hours, according to the proclamation, “with personality and a warm smile.”

“Those women are unbelievable,” said Chief Richard Stanley. “They are there every day. I would think they are full-time employees.”

Jackie Lindsey, outgoing president of the Wareham Village Association was honored for the time she gave to the association, to the Swan Festival and other events, and to the community in general.
