With slideshow: Onset illuminates
Fog that rolled over Onset about an hour before dusk certainly didn't cloud the fun at the Onset Bay Association's annual Illumination Night on Saturday.
Volunteers placed flares around Onset Beach, Wickets Island, and surrounding beaches. The flares were lit just after 8 p.m. to the sounds of cheering on-lookers and horns from moored boats.
New to the event this year, the Junior Onset Bay Association, made up of older children and teens, provided face-painting and helped children craft musical instruments before the event, helping children get ready for an appearance from the Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society Brass Band.
The band marched down Onset Avenue to the gazebo on the Onset bluff, to the delight of neighbors and Illumination Night attendees, who joined the parade. The children then joined in with their instruments and marched to the pier before the lighting of the flares.
Susan Ricci, Onset Bay Association member and chair of the town's Community Events Committee, said she hoped the band and the parade would help attract tourists and residents to the event after they heard the music.
"We're really driving things home" in making Onset a tourist destination, Ricci said.
