Some naysayers being hypocritical about Walmart relocation

Jul 26, 2011

To the Editor:

I want to respond to the latest rant and conjecture in reference to one of the components of the Walmart relocation regarding the supposed strain on the town's sewer capacity ("Walmart super center will strain resources," published in Wareham Week on July 21.)

In other words, it is recommended that there be no grocery component to this project? What future home-grown small businesses will be restricted from accessing the town's resources?

We are willing to forgo this project with jobs, more revenue, and first and foremost - an expanded line of groceries and a deli?

The price of gas is going up (again) and at the same time we are expected to patronize the two existing supermarkets in town because you are worried the sewer capacity may be strained? In other words, there cannot be any prosperity in this town because of supposition? Where is in the logic?

We all need access to a beneficial way of life. With the economy being what it is, we have to live within our means.

In order to survive we have to shop around for the best way to purchase the things we need to feed and clothe ourselves and our families. Going to a supermarket that exploits the consumer - especially during the tourist season - is not my way of living in this community.

Walmart has done nothing wrong. It has been in East Wareham for years serving this community and surrounding towns without a whimper.

I shop around and the feeling is Walamrt has everything a consumer needs. Some items cannot be found in other stores.

So where is the problem? For some, it's change. For others, it's personal. Some people would complan that the ice cream they are eating is too cold.

You can think of many reasons why some people do not like Walmart. The way I see it, Walmart has helped me and my family survive in this world all these years.

How many of you dissidents in town shop at Walmart? But when they want to relocate and expand and be competitive, you think up excuses as to why they can't. Kind of being hypocritical, ain't it?

Thank you for your time.
