Some youth sports leagues cancel, postpone season

Jun 22, 2020

As the coronavirus pandemic continues into the summer, some youth sports leagues have postponed or canceled their season entirely due to the risk of spreading the virus.

The Wareham Tigers Athletic Association canceled its spring flag football season. League officials then took a poll, and determined that even if the season was pushed into the late summer, many members could, or would not commit to playing.

According to Coordinator Damon Solomon, the association does plan on holding competitive and sideline cheerleading, as well as both tackle and flag football leagues this fall.

Solomon added that he tentatively plans on starting football programs in August, and starting training sessions for cheer in July.

On June 11, Solomon wrote that “ Unfortunately close proximity is inherent to all of our offered sports which makes adapting  to the restrictions in the current phase impractical.”

He added that parents are allowed to register players without having to pay until the first week of August, so that they won’t have to pay if the season is further postponed or canceled.

The Southcoast Warriors Track and Field League canceled its summer season indefinitely.

A league official posted an update to the Southcoast Warriors website on May 20, writing “ Based on the unknowns with the Covid-19 in the upcoming summer I feel it would be too challenging applying the CDC guidelines during the entire season with still so many unknowns with this virus.”

Full refunds are available to those who registered for the summer program.
