Southcoast should save Tobey Homestead

Mar 21, 2019

To the Editor:

We are hoping that this letter touches a nerve with all caring town people who are involved with saving the Toby Homestead from being demolished in order to build a new emergency wing at the hospital. I know that more space is urgently needed and I thank Southcoast for their expansion vision for the future of healthcare here in Wareham.

To demolish the Homestead, however, is nothing less than a crime.

We can be thankful for the efforts of town government and especially the Wareham Historical Commission for their dedication in preserving our Historic Village.

$500,000 at minimum will be needed, as I have researched with engineers and large structure movers, and relocating the mansion is absolutely doable! IT CAN BE SAVED!  There are several vacant parcels of land available just a couple hundred feet south on Main Street.  Does an opportunity exist here?

It is Southcoast's responsibility, not ours, to save this building.  They must come forward and do what is ethically right for our town and our citizens. Even though Southcoast is a non-profit group, they are in line to bring in huge profits annually from this expansion.

To Southcoast Hospital:  We will never allow you to tear down such an architectural treasure in our Historic                                                  Village.

You must step up to the plate and do the right thing for our Town.

You must foot the entire cost to acquire land, move the structure, and renovate in order to afford our citizens to have another magnificent structure to use for public service.
